The Experiment in International Living (EIL)

The Experiment in International Living (EIL) offers challenging three-five week summer abroad programs for high school students. The founding program of the Vermont-based non-profit organization World Learning Inc., EIL summer programs combine a cross-cultural orientation and homestay with a focus on cultural immersion and thematic exploration. Themes EIL programs explore include: language training, ecology, community service, regional issues, theatre, the arts, cooking, sustainable development/fair trade, and/or photography. EIL has partnered with Women of Tomorrow Mentor & Scholarship Program to nominate talented and motivated students to be considered for Outbound Ambassador EIL scholarships each cycle. Over the last seventy-four summers, Experiment in International Living programs have broken new ground in cross-cultural education for high school students. Experiment programs challenge participants to develop a deeper understanding of how to communicate across cultural, national, racial, and linguistic borders while engaging in the day-to-day life of another culture. Requirements and Expectations Due to the intellectually and experientially challenging nature of The Experiment in International Living program, we are looking for highly motivated and talented young men and women.

As a result, we consider the following;

  • Ambassador applicants must be current sophomores or juniors in high school.
  • Students should be in high academic standing at their respective schools.
  • Students who are active members of their school community. Scholarship participants must bring something special to the group. In the past, participants have been athletes, poets, actors, musicians, etc.
  • They have also been active in student government, community service, and/or school clubs.

Note: Only French and Spanish speaking countries have language prerequisites. Collaborative Goals Thank you for working with us to connect talented young people with enriching summer programs. We value the partnership with you and our nationwide network of youth mentoring organizations and schools. You are vitally important in our goal to reach deserving young people each and every summer. We look to your for guidance and support throughout the application process, selection phase, pre-program preparation, and post-program communication.

We look to your expertise and enthusiasm in the following ways:

  • Identify and nominate top students to apply for Experiment programs.
  • Mentor students throughout the application process if they have any questions or concerns and make sure they are submitting complete applications.
  • If you cannot answer questions about the application process or program, please encourage students or their parents to contact us directly.
  • Be available to answer any questions about applicants from your mentoring organization or school. If you are not the appropriate contact person, please let us know with whom we should connect.
  • Be available or contact us in the pre-departure phase if students have any questions about preparing for their journey (i.e. questions about passports, visas, health guidelines, etc).
  • In some cases, work with us post-program to communicate with students about submitting any post-program essays or participating in any post-program events.
